In 1938, Martha Graham choreographed American Document, a work inspired by essential American texts that addressed the question, “What is America?”. This groundbreaking dance-theater piece paired spoken word with movement and featured Graham’s first male dancer, Erick Hawkins, amongst Graham’s established troupe of female dancers that included May O’Donnell, Jane Dudley, and Sophie Maslow. For this reimagining, Oliver Tobin drew inspiration from Graham’s 1938 and 1989 dance libretto, a selection of photographs of American Document by Barabara Morgan, and a short film of the original cast dancing at Bennington College.
